Born on April 7, 1907 into a Samurai family, Minoru Mochizuki Shihan began studying Judo at the age of 6. In 1926, he enrolled at the Kodokan, dojo of Jigoro Kano Shihan, quickly becoming a disciple of Kyuso Mifune (10th dan in Judo).

Kano Shihan encouraged his students to study other disciplines. Mochizuki Shihan began studying Katori Shintoryu, Jujutsu with Takaji Shimizu and Kendo at the Yushinkan dojo. Seeing that he mastered these arts quickly, Jigoro Kano sent him to study under Morihei Ueshiba Soke.

He focused on selecting techniques from Judo, Aikido and the many other martial arts he had studied, choosing those that best represented the ideas of Jigoro Kano. From this was born what he called Yoseikan Budo.

In November 1931, he opened his own dojo, the Yoseikan, in the city of Shizuoka. He was the first to teach Aikido in the West during his trip to France in 1951. He passed away in May 2003 near Aix-en-Provence.

Master SUGINO Yukihiro was born in Kawasaki in 1937. He is the son of the great master SUGINO Yoshio and began studying Katori as a child. In parallel, he was introduced to Aikido.

Now retired after a career as an electric-motor engineer, he devotes himself to teaching Katori Shintō ryū and Aikido at his dojo in Kawasaki, the YUISHINKAN, which he inherited from his father upon the latter's passing in 1998.

He received the approval of the SOKE of Katori Shintō ryū, Mr. IIZASA Yasusada, to perpetuate his father's teaching style, taught without interruption for over 60 years.

He inherited his father's dojo and responsibilities, and was appointed 9th dan Hanshi of NIHON KOBUDO by the DAI NIPPON BUTOKUKAI.

Master SUGINO is also a 7th dan, Shihan in Aikido Aikikai.

2006 was the first year of his visit to Canada, which continues to this day. Thanks to his teachings and the diligent work of practitioners, we have become the branch of Tenshin Shōden Katori Shinto Ryu in North America.
